How to apply for new PAN - Permanent Account Number

In early days people generally apply for new PAN number through an agent to avoid all the hassles. But since last few years, you can apply for your PAN number through online mode. You do not need to appoint an agent and pay him some extra bucks. Now you can apply for a new PAN number, reprint your PAN number and do correction or changes in your PAN details very easily and check your PAN application status from your home.

To apply for new PAN number, you need to have below-mentioned documents available with you.

Proof of Identity to apply for new PAN


  • Copy of Ration card having photograph of the applicant
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of Elector's photo identity card
  • Copy of driving license
  • Certificate of address in original signed by a member of Parliament
  • Certificate of address in original signed by Member of Legislative Assembly
  • Certificate of address in original signed by a Municipal Councilor
  • Certificate of address in original signed by a Gazetted Officer
  • Copy of AADHAR card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Copy of Arm's license
  • Copy of pensioner card having photograph of the applicant
  • Copy of Central Government Health Scheme
  • Copy of Ex Servicemen Contributory  Health Scheme photo card
  • Bank certificate original on letter head from branch (along with name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing duly attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant
  • Copy of Photo identity card issued by the Central Government or a State Government or a Public Sector Undertaking

  • Copy of consumer gas connection card or book or piped gas bill

  • Copy of broadband connection bill



Proof of Date of Birth (DoB) applicable for Individuals & Karta of HUF


  • Copy of Birth certificate issued by the Municipality Authority or any office authorized to issue Birth and Death Certificate by the Registrar of births and deaths or Indian Consulate 
  • Copy of Pension payment order
  • Copy of Marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriages
  • Copy of Matriculation certificate
  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of driving license
  • Copy of Domicile certificate issued by the Government
  • Copy of affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth
  • Copy of Elector's photo identity card
  • Copy of AADHAR card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India 
  • Copy of Central Government Health Scheme
  • Copy of Ex Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card

Steps to apply for new PAN through NSDL website:


Click on New PAN for Indian Citizens (Form 49A)


Click on Online Application for New PAN (Form 49A). Before clicking on Online Application for New PAN (Form 49A), you must read Do's and Dont's for New PAN application and Important Instructions and Guidelines at a glance. It will help you to avoid mistakes during application.

Select Category of Applicant as Individual
Category of Applicant-  Individual, Partnership Firm, Body of Individuals, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), Association of Persons, Local Authority, Company, Trust, Artificial Juridical Persons, Government Agency, Limited Liability Partnership 


Point 1 to 6



1. Full name (Title: Shri/Mr., Smt/Mrs., Kumari/Ms, Last Name, First Name, Middle Name)
2. Name you would like to printed on the card (Exclude prefix)
3. Have you ever been known by any other name? Yes/No
4. Gender: Male/Female
5. Date of birth: DD/MM/YYYY
6.Father's Name: Last Name/First Name/ Middle Name

Point 7 to 12



7. Address: Residential Address/Office Address 
8. Address for communication: Residential/Office
9. Telephone No: Mobile no, Email no
10. Status of Applicant: Individual (already selected)
11. Registration Number: (Not applicable of individual)
12: In case of citizen of India, then mention your AADHAR number


Point 13 to 16



13. Source of Income: (a) Are you a salaried employee? b) If you are engaged in a business/ profession, indicate nature of business or profession and the relevant code c) If you are not covered by (a) or (b) above, indicate the source of income if any
14. Full name, address of the Representative Assessee, who is assessable under the Income Tax Act in respect of the person, whose particulars have been given in column 1 to 13

Appointing Representative Assessee? Yes/No
15. Document enclosed: Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, Proof of Date of Birth
16. Declaration


Payment: Available modes of payment are demand draft, credit card/debit card, net banking.
Processing fee of PAN application is Rs 107.00 (Application fee Rs 93.00  + 14.50% service tax) if communication address is within India

The processing fee of PAN application is Rs. 989.00 (Application fee Rs 93.00 + Dispatch Charges Rs 771.00 + 14.50% service tax) if communication address is outside IndiaFor any issue regarding PAN number or income tax, you must visit IT dept. official website.
